Typisch für den Schlangenkühler ist sein gewundenes Steigrohr, welches sich in einem Mantel befindet und so vom Kühlmedium umspült ist (konträr zum Dimroth-Kühler). Aufgrund dieser Kondensatführung ist die Kondensationsleistung sehr gering obwohl die Kühlstrecke sehr lang ist. Diese Art von Kühler dient somit meist als nachgeschalteter zusätzlicher Kühler und nicht als eigenständiger Destillationskühler. Aufgrund des besseren Abflusses des Kondensats im gewundenen Steigrohrs ist der Kühleraufbau in senkrechter Position erforderlich.
